Choosing your PC

What gaming PC do I need?

Three things decide it, and none of them are component names.

  1. The game

Different games demand different things. Competitive titles can benefit from very high frame rates, while graphically intensive games place more demand on your graphics card.

  2. Your screen

A gaming PC driving a 1080p monitor has a different job from one driving a high refresh 1440p or 4K display. Your monitor can make a big difference to the hardware that makes sense.

  3. How you want to play

There's a difference between wanting a game to run well and wanting maximum settings, ray tracing or very high refresh rates. We'll help you choose the level that's right for you.

Questions

Before you choose

How do I know which gaming PC I need?
Start with three things: the games you play, the monitor you'll play them on, and how you want them to look. Those decide far more than any single component does. If you tell us those three, we can point you at the right machine in a couple of minutes.
Can one gaming PC play all my games?
Yes. A well chosen gaming PC will run everything you play, and the sensible question isn't whether a game runs but how well you want it to run. The most demanding game you play is the one worth building around, because everything lighter is then covered too.
What's more important for gaming, the CPU or the graphics card?
For most games the graphics card does the heavy lifting, so it's usually where the money goes first. The processor still matters, particularly for competitive games running at very high frame rates and for simulation and strategy games that are doing a lot of thinking. The two need to be sensibly matched, which is a large part of what we do for you.
Is 16GB of RAM enough for gaming?
For a lot of people, yes. Where it starts to feel tight is with heavily modded games, streaming while you play, or having a browser full of tabs open alongside. Memory is also one of the easiest things to add later, so it's rarely the thing to agonise over.
Should I choose 1080p, 1440p or 4K?
Your monitor sets the workload, so it's worth deciding before the PC. 1080p is the easiest to drive and suits high refresh competitive play. 1440p is the sweet spot most people land on. 4K looks superb and asks a great deal more of the hardware. If you already have a monitor, tell us what it is and we'll build to it.
What's the difference between a Core PC and a custom Utopia gaming PC?
A Core PC is one we've specified for you — the hardware is already chosen and balanced, and you simply pick the one that suits. A custom Utopia is built around your choices: more performance, a particular look, or room to grow. Both are built by hand here in Scotland and carry the same warranty and support.
Can I upgrade my gaming PC later?
Yes, and we build with that in mind — sensible cases, power supplies with headroom, and parts you can get at. You can bring it to us in Kilmarnock or send it in, and we'll do the work for you if you'd rather not open it yourself.
What if I can't find my game?
We haven't written a guide for every game, and there's no shame in that. Tell us what you play and we'll give you a straight answer on what you need, whether or not there's a page for it here.

Still not sure?

Tell us what you play.
We'll help with the rest.

If you're not sure which PC makes sense, talk to the Utopia team. Tell us the games you play, your monitor and your budget and we'll help point you in the right direction.
