The real risk

Most cyber attacks don't start like they do in the movies.

They usually start with something small and completely ordinary. Not a break-in. A gap that nobody had a reason to notice.

01 A phishing email convincing enough that nobody thought twice about it.

02 An account that never had multi factor authentication switched on.

03 Software that hasn't been updated in longer than anyone realised.

04 An old user account that nobody got round to disabling.

05 The same password, used in more than one place.

06 A Microsoft 365 setup configured quickly and never revisited.

07 Someone clicking something they immediately wished they hadn't.

08 Backups that run every night and have never actually been tested.

Good cyber security is mostly about making the ordinary things difficult to get wrong.

Managed cyber security

Security isn't one product. It's everything working together.

Take as much or as little as you need. Most businesses already have some of this in place — the value is usually in making the pieces work as one thing rather than eight separate ones.

01

Endpoint protection

Managed protection for PCs and laptops, centrally monitored rather than installed once and forgotten about.

02

Microsoft 365 security

Multi factor authentication, account security, sensible access policies and ongoing management.

Microsoft 365 support
03

Email & phishing protection

Filtering designed to stop spam, malicious email and increasingly convincing phishing attempts.

04

Patching & updates

Keeping operating systems and software updated so known vulnerabilities don't sit open unnecessarily.

05

Monitoring

Keeping an eye on managed devices and systems so unusual behaviour can be investigated sooner.

06

Staff awareness

Helping people recognise phishing, suspicious requests and the things technology alone can't catch.

07

Backup & recovery

Protecting important business data and making sure there is a practical route back if something goes wrong.

08

Account & access management

Making sure people have access to what they need, and that it is removed properly when they leave.

Cyber Essentials

Need Cyber Essentials? We'll help you get ready.

Cyber Essentials is a UK Government backed standard developed by the National Cyber Security Centre. Sometimes it's something you choose to do. Sometimes a customer, insurer or supply chain asks for it. Either way, we'll help you understand what's required, identify what needs fixed and get the technical side into shape before certification.

The five technical control areas

01

Firewalls

Making sure the boundary between your network and the internet is doing its job, and is configured rather than just present.

02

Secure configuration

Devices and software set up properly rather than left on default settings that were never meant for business use.

03

Security update management

Operating systems and applications kept up to date, so known vulnerabilities get closed rather than accumulating.

04

User access control

People having the access their job needs and no more, with administrator accounts treated as the exception.

05

Malware protection

Protection in place on the devices your team actually uses, kept current and centrally visible.

We help you work out what's in scope, assess how your current setup measures up, identify the technical gaps, make the changes needed, get you ready for the assessment itself and keep things in good shape afterwards. The certification is awarded by an appointed Certification Body — our job is making sure you're in a position to pass it.

Your people

Technology can filter an email. Your team still has to decide whether to trust it.

Cyber security awareness training doesn't need to be a lecture. We help your team recognise the handful of things that actually come up, so the right reaction becomes the instinctive one.

The aim isn't to turn everyone into a cyber security expert.
It's to make the right reaction feel obvious when something unusual happens.

Why Utopia

Cyber security without the scare tactics.

We're not a security vendor with a quota. We're the team that already looks after business technology in Ayrshire, and security is part of doing that properly.

One team

The same people who look after your IT can look after your security, so the two aren't treated as separate worlds.

Local when it matters

We're based in Kilmarnock and support organisations across Ayrshire and beyond, so when somebody needs to be in the room that's realistic.

Hardware and software

We've spent more than 30 years building, repairing and supporting computers, so we understand what sits underneath the software too.

Straight talking

If something needs fixed, we'll explain why. If you don't need something, we'll tell you that too.

Questions

The things businesses ask us about security.

If yours isn't here, just ask. There is no such thing as a daft question about this, and we would rather answer it than have you guess.

What cyber security does a small business actually need?

It varies with what you do and what you hold, but the foundations are fairly consistent: account security with multi factor authentication, protection on the devices people use, software kept updated, email filtering, backups that have been tested, sensible control over who can access what, and a team who know what a dodgy email looks like. Most small businesses have some of this already.

What are managed cyber security services?

The difference between owning security software and having somebody actually running it. Buying a product is one afternoon. Managed cyber security services mean somebody is monitoring it, keeping it updated, noticing when something looks wrong and dealing with it — rather than a licence quietly expiring on a machine nobody has looked at in two years.

What is Cyber Essentials?

A UK Government backed certification scheme developed by the National Cyber Security Centre. It sets out five technical control areas — firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection — and certifies that a business has them in place. It is often asked for by customers, insurers or as part of a supply chain requirement.

Can you help us prepare for Cyber Essentials certification?

Yes. We look at what's in scope, assess your current setup against the five control areas, tell you plainly where the gaps are and do the technical work to close them, so you go into the assessment in good shape. The certificate itself is awarded by an appointed Certification Body rather than by us — our part is getting you ready for it and keeping things that way afterwards.

Do you provide cyber security awareness training?

Yes. Not a day in a classroom — practical help so your team can spot phishing emails, fake invoices, unexpected login prompts and the requests that feel slightly off. The goal is that people know what normal looks like, and feel comfortable asking when something isn't.

Can cyber security be included with our IT support?

Yes, and it usually works better that way. The people who manage your devices, accounts and Microsoft 365 are the people best placed to secure them. Our Managed IT Services include security as part of looking after a business properly rather than as a separate line item.

Let's talk

Not sure where your security gaps are? That's a perfectly good place to start.

Tell us a little about your business and what you're trying to protect. We'll help you work out what's worth fixing first, what's already fine and what the sensible next step looks like.

No scare tactics. Just an honest look at where you are.01563 574280
