STOP USING THE DEVICE
If files have been accidentally deleted or a drive is failing, continued use can overwrite recoverable information or worsen the fault.
UTOPIA RECOVERY WORKSHOP
Files gone?
Don't panic.
Lost files, a failed hard drive or a computer that won't start? Bring it to our Kilmarnock workshop. We'll assess what has happened, explain the options and give your data the best sensible chance of recovery.

FIRST THINGS FIRST
When data disappears, the instinct is to keep clicking until it comes back. Sometimes that's exactly what makes recovery harder.
If files have been accidentally deleted or a drive is failing, continued use can overwrite recoverable information or worsen the fault.
If a hard drive is clicking, grinding, disappearing or repeatedly failing to start, switch it off and leave it off.
Software can help with some straightforward cases, but if the information is genuinely important, experimenting can reduce the options available later.
Tell us what happened, what device the data is on and how important the files are. We'll help decide the sensible next step.
If the data matters, doing less can sometimes give us more to work with.
WHAT WE RECOVER
Bring us the drive, the card, the stick or the whole computer. We'll work out what has happened before anyone decides what to do about it.
DESKTOP & LAPTOP
Internal desktop and laptop hard drives, including drives that no longer appear, have developed faults or contain accidentally deleted data.
PORTABLE & DESKTOP
Portable hard drives from the major manufacturers, including drives that have stopped working, been dropped or suffered damage.
SATA & NVMe
Solid state drives and NVMe storage experiencing corruption, controller problems, deletion or other failures.
REMOVABLE MEDIA
USB memory sticks, SD cards and other removable storage containing lost, damaged or inaccessible files.
THE RECOVERY
Handing over a drive that holds the only copy of something takes a bit of trust. So here is how it goes, start to finish.
Tell us what happened.
Bring the device or the drive into our Kilmarnock workshop, or contact us first. You don't need to diagnose the problem yourself. Knowing whether it was dropped, stopped working suddenly, was accidentally formatted, or holds files you can't replace all helps us decide how to approach it.
First, understand the problem.
We'll inspect the device and work out whether the fault looks logical, electronic, physical, or whether it lies somewhere else in the computer entirely. An assessment doesn't always settle straight away whether the data can be recovered, but it tells us what we are dealing with.
You stay in control.
We'll explain what we believe is possible, and any cost involved, before significant chargeable recovery work goes ahead. Where the case is straightforward, the work may be carried out by our own technicians here in Kilmarnock.
Some drives need specialist facilities.
Serious mechanical hard drive failures and other complex cases may need to go to a specialist data recovery partner with laboratory facilities. If that is the sensible route, you'll know before anything is sent anywhere, and you decide whether it goes.
Getting the files back is the goal.
Where recovery is successful, we'll agree how the recovered data comes back to you and explain anything you should know about the original device before you rely on it again.
THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB
A lot of common storage problems can be dealt with from our Kilmarnock workshop. Some can't, and pretending otherwise wouldn't help you.
HERE IN KILMARNOCK
A good number of cases are logical rather than mechanical: the storage itself still works, but something above it has gone wrong. Our own technicians handle those here.
LABORATORY FACILITIES
When a drive has failed mechanically or been physically damaged, opening it outside a clean room can make things worse. Cases like these may be referred to a specialist data recovery partner, and we'll discuss that with you before anything moves.
These are examples rather than a rule. Which route makes sense depends on what the assessment finds — a drive that looks straightforward can turn out not to be, and occasionally it works the other way round.
The aim isn't to do everything ourselves. It's to get your data into the right hands without sending you off to work it all out yourself.
YOUR DATA
Handing over a drive means handing over whatever is on it. We don't take that lightly.
Recovering data sometimes means technicians need to confirm that files have been recovered successfully. That doesn't make the contents ours to browse. Your device and your information are handled with the same care and discretion we'd expect with our own.
We access only what is reasonably necessary to carry out and check the recovery, and the device stays in our workshop while we do it.
WHAT PEOPLE USUALLY BRING US
WHY UTOPIA
There is no shortage of places you can post a hard drive to. Here is what you get by bringing it to Kilmarnock instead.
Bring the device to our Kilmarnock workshop and talk to an actual technician, rather than posting it to an address you found online and waiting to hear back.
We'll tell you what we know, what we don't know yet, and what the options are, before you decide what happens next. If the news is bad, you'll get that straight too.
Because we're a computer repair workshop as well, we can look past the drive itself when the fault turns out to be somewhere else in the machine.
If a recovery needs facilities or expertise beyond what makes sense in our own workshop, we'll say so and talk you through what that would involve.
BEFORE YOU BRING IT IN
It depends on what has happened to the storage device and what is needed to get the data off it. We'll assess the problem first and explain the likely cost before any significant chargeable recovery work goes ahead, so nothing gets run up without you knowing. Cases that need a specialist recovery laboratory can cost considerably more than straightforward software based recovery.
Often, yes — but it depends on how the drive has failed. Hard drive data recovery is a very different job on a drive with a corrupt file system than on one that has failed mechanically, and we won't know which we're dealing with until we've assessed it. What we won't do is promise you a result before we've seen the drive.
Yes, we can assess failed or damaged external drives. Quite often the drive inside is fine and the fault is in the enclosure or its connection, which is a straightforward fix. If the drive has been dropped or physically damaged, external hard drive data recovery may need specialist facilities, and we'll tell you if that looks like the case.
SSD data recovery can be possible, but solid state drives behave differently from mechanical ones. There is no platter to read directly, and depending on the failure and on what has happened to the drive since, information that was recoverable can stop being so. If the files on an SSD matter, stop using it and ask us before trying anything else.
For simple cases — a recently deleted file on a drive that is otherwise healthy — software sometimes works. The risk is that recovery software often writes to the same disk it is reading from, which can overwrite the very information you are trying to get back. If the files are important or irreplaceable, stop and ask for advice first.
We access only what is reasonably necessary to carry out the recovery and to check that it has worked. Confirming files have come back intact does mean opening some of them, and we'd rather say that plainly than claim we never look at anything. Your device and your information stay in our workshop and are treated with discretion.
Not every computer that won't start has a failed drive. Power supplies, memory, boards and software all produce the same symptom, and the storage is often perfectly healthy underneath. If the machine itself is the problem, our PC & Laptop Repair in Kilmarnock service is the better place to start. Bring it in either way and we'll work out which one you actually need.
