X870 vs. B850: Are You Paying for Features You’ll Never Use?

By Craig Hume | Published on 04/03/25

More power, more features… but do you actually need them?

Imagine buying a high-performance race car.

It’s packed with a turbocharged engine, carbon fiber everything, and a launch mode that rockets you from 0 to 60 in under three seconds. Sounds amazing, right?

But if you’re just commuting to work, sitting in traffic, and occasionally hitting the motorway… was it worth the extra cost?

That’s the X870 vs. B850 debate in a nutshell.

X870/X870E: Built for the hardcore. Overclockers, power users, and anyone who needs every drop of performance. Think Wi-Fi 7, PCIe 5.0 across the board, and beefy VRMs for max stability.

B850: Smart money. You still get PCIe 5.0 if the board supports it, overclocking if you need it, and Wi-Fi 7 if the manufacturer includes it. It’s not about what’s missing—it’s about only paying for what you’ll actually use.

The Truth Bomb: A fully loaded B850 board is nearly identical to an X870. If you’re not maxing out your CPU or pushing extreme overclocks, you won’t notice the difference.

The Play:Before spending extra on “just in case” features, ask yourself:

Am I overclocking? No? B850 does the job.
Do I need PCIe 5.0 for my storage today? No? B850 still works.
Is Wi-Fi 7 a must-have or just a nice-to-have? You get the idea.

Future-proofing is great, but don’t pay for a racecar when you’re only driving to Tesco.
